The human brain is amazingly complex and acts as the control center for nearly every bodily process and function. In cases where an individual suffers a blow to the head where brain damage is suffered, the resulting effects can be significant and devastating.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 14 percent of all traumatic brain injuries stem from involvement in motor vehicle crashes. Car and truck accidents are among the top three causes of TBIs and, for those individuals directly impacted, life is often never the same.
In the wake of a motor vehicle accident, adverse symptoms related to a TBI may be immediately obvious or may take days or even weeks to manifest. Some common symptoms include dizziness, nausea, fatigue, confusion, seizures and headaches. Individuals who report experiencing these symptoms will need to undergo additional medical imaging tests to determine the exact location and severity of the brain damage.
Based on these factors, an individual may experience cognitive and physiological side effects including vision problems, memory loss, difficulty concentrating, mood changes, depression, anxiety, loss of smell, speech impairments, sensitivity to sound or light and a range of other sensory and cognitive problems. While rehabilitative treatments may be somewhat effective in restoring functioning, brain damage is permanent and therefore many TBI victims continue to suffer these types of adverse side effects for the rest of their lives.
In cases where an individual’s TBI resulted from a car or truck accident in which another driver’s negligence is in question, it’s wise to seek legal advice. The personal and financial costs of a brain injury are significant and individuals and family members may be able to recover compensation.
